Eurogamer Expo: Hands on with Call of Duty: Black Ops 2

Well it still seems people still love to rock the shotgun which still seems far too overpowered and at its heart it’s still very much a copy and paste formula however, I had a lot of fun with Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, it feels far more intense than MW3 and headshots seemed to finally work well again. Grenades don’t go as far when thrown and it seems Black Ops 2 has rediscovered the need to actually aim when shooting – it felt far less run and gun, I was often able to outshoot people than not.

The shotgun may still annoy many and I’m sure once people learn to quick scope then the sniper will continue to be a topic of frustration, but I managed to enjoy two games free of any snipers trying out their QS moves.

Guns sound beefy as you fire off your shots with the usual suspects to choose from when selecting your arsenal. If you thought there were a lot of customisation options in previous games then prepare to be amazed by the sheer quantity of options available for you to tweak, weapon attachments, perks, care packages it has it all but laid out in a far more accessible way than MW3 which initially felt confusing.

The maps I played seemed interesting and provided plenty of bottlenecks that firefights broke out in – similar to how COD4 played out – while BLOPS2 didn’t have the same high-speed intense feel that Halo 4 gave me, it offered a nice plodding pace demanding patience, skill, accuracy and a good command over the tools of your trade. While I didn’t have the chance to play about with everything on offer I did find some nice new toys to play with. The hunter killer is a beast, throwing it out like a paper airplane you’re pretty much guaranteed a kill or two no matter which direction you throw it, the electro grenades were also good fun, frying unaware victims leaving you free to pick them off as they struggled against the volts freezing them in place.

Black Ops 2 felt like a nice change of pace to that of MW3 and I’ve high hopes that it will be able to bring back the excellent multiplayer gameplay of COD4 that many of us still crave.
