When Crystal Dynamics’ reboot of Tomb Raider was released last year, it was lauded as one of the best in the series and of that year (although over shadowed by a year of nothing but stellar titles) so it was inevitable that a sequel would be on the cards, although nothing has officially been mentioned. Until now at least.
Speaking at this year’s Comic-Con, Gail Simone pretty much let the cat out of the bag, explaining that she will be behind a comic that “will lead directly into the sequel”.
Officially announced by Dark Horse Comics, set to be released in February next year, the comic is set shortly after the events of the first game and will send Lara on a global adventure according to Simone who spoke with Kotaku.
“I chose to do this series solely because I loved the game so much, so we’re definitely keeping the tone of the game, I’ve always loved the classic, cool Lara Croft, but this feels like her origin story, like we’re seeing her before she becomes the icon, and it’s very compelling to me. The storytelling in the game hooked me instantly. The biggest difference is, the game told a claustrophobic story in an isolated setting. We are going globetrotting. We start just a few weeks after the end of the game, and this is all in continuity, it will be Tomb Raider canon, and lead directly into the sequel. This is what got me excited; we get to be part of Lara Croft history.”
So that’s settled then I guess. Square Enix mentioned back in March that Tomb Raider was one of a handful of titles that failed to meet its rather lofty sales targets, but thankfully it seems that hasn’t put them off producing more from what is one of the most iconic gaming franchises ever created.
So how do you feel? Will you be buying the comic? are you drooling for a bit more of Lara?
