“Helmet staying on” in Halo 4

343 Industries have said that they’re not quite ready for the chief to remove his helmet just yet.
Development director Frank O’Conner understands that even though the Halo novels, Halo: Fall of Reach in particular, contained detailed descriptions of the chief, they still feel that keeping the helmet on is essential for the game-play.
“..that’s a device to keep the player invested in the character and keep the player from constantly being reminded that they’re not a hero or that they have to be a boy or they have to be a girl, or whatever that is.”
O’Conner went on to talk about the fate of the Chief himself. While he wasn’t willing to confirm (understandably) whether he would survive or not, he does mention how important the storytelling process was to the game and that “things happen… good interesting stories have things that happen in them that are not comfortable and that are meaningful and that are permanent.”
