Guinness World Records 2011 Gamer’s Edition: Top 50 Video Game characters

Since 2008 Guinness World Records has published a Gamer’s Edition, a separate Guinness World Records book dedicated entirely to games. In the latest edition over 13,000 readers voted for their favourite video game character of all time, the list includes characters from games which are over 30 years old.

Call of Duty fans will be happy to see “Soap” MacTavish, Captain Price and “Ghost” making an appearance whilst Halo fans should also be delighted with Master Chief coming in 3rd place. Impressively, Ezio comes in at 35th place after only making his video game debut in 2009 with Assassin’s Creed 2. There is a good mix of classic and modern characters although 8 out of the top 10 all made their video game debut before the year 2000 showing us that gamers seem to prefer the classic characters such as Pac-Man, Solid Snake, Laura Croft and Mario.

“The world has seen so many pivotal characters throughout the history of gaming that asking our readers to narrow it down to just 50 was a challenge in itself. Some of the choices on the list are obvious, some less so, but it’s sure to get gamers talking about their favourites.” – Gaz Deaves, Guinness World Records Gaming Editor.

To celebrate the release of the top 50 video game characters of all time Guinness World Records have released an application on their Facebook page which allows you to find out what videogame character you are most similar to, check it out here.

I don't think I'd put Mario at #1. He's not a deep enough character to be over others on the list.
And what about A Boy and his Blob from the Wii version.
Also, Ash Ketchum doesn't appear in Pokemon Red/Green. The main character is named Red. Ash only appears in the T.V. series.

  • Steven Yehezkiel

Hmm, better also put pointman from F.E.A.R (Sierra, WB games, 2005). Reason ? Well he can slow-mo and survive on his mother and brother's nightmare and madness :P.

Another one is Alex Mason (call of duty : black ops) and Tommy Vercetti (GTA Vice City), and other is Isaac Clarke (dead space)

Why isn't Luigi in there? He IS Mario's brother after all. He plays a much bigger role than PEACH ever will. She's just the dried out damsel in distress. Who's by Mario's side whenever Bowser's wreaking trouble? Luigi. Who's there by Mario's side when Wario and Waluigi are causing trouble along with Bowser? Luigi. Shows how much depreciated he is by other people. Yoshi isn't the only hero who's at Mario's side you know. Not saying he should be #1 but he should at LEAST be on the list. Why is the game called "Mario Bros." if Luigi isn't on the list…. Cmon people. Like the guest said before, Ash is only in the TV anime not the games. The games feature Red, Ash's game and manga counterpart.

  • Monicagalindo

cool!!!, but why is naruto there… i'm a very big fan, but… why he's there?

  • I'am At School

Sonic should be 2nd/3rd,I mean seriously!?He is famous too!
    PS-I am a Sonic fan,but I'm even a Mario fan.But I deserve that Mario's 1st,Sonic place 10th and Shadow 25th. 🙂

    • James

Sonic is an awful charactar, Link deserved 1rst!!!!!

  • Ganonslayer101

I don't Agree with Having Goku and Naruto on their because while they are in games it's not their main form of Media it should be characters whose Main form of Entertainment is in Video Games. Also Mario is so boring why is he at one and Ash isn't in the Games the character's name is Red.
