Gears of War 3 trailer analysis

Gears of War 3 was probably the Internets worst kept secret with Xbox Live accidentally releasing a promo advertising it for April next year. Last night Cliff Bleszinski appeared on the Late Show with Jimmy Fallon and screened the first trailer for Gears of War 3 which can be seen below, but what does the trailer show exactly?
Keeping in lines with the videos for both Gears of War and Gears of War 2 the video has a soothing, and almost emotional soundtrack, the song being played this time around is Heron Blue by Sun Kil Moon.
So what can we gather from this video? It looks as if the game is set quite some time after the last title and everyone looks a little more aged with Dom looking as if he’s let himself go, no doubt after what happened in the last title to his beloved wife Maria. I think its safe to assume that a good 2/3 years have passed before Gears of War 3 starts.
The video opens up with Dom running through a derilict city that looks like its been hit by a volcano, we can only guess that it will be explained in future video as to why bodies made of ash are lumbering around. Dom also seems like he has given up hope shortly after when he falls to the ground and has a locust aiming a weapon at him but the look on his face gives the impression that he’s ready to die.
Marcus appears shortly after and blows the unsuspecting locust away with a double barrelled shotgun, thus introducing a new weapon into the game which I’m sure will please all Gears fans across the globe.
A new female COG is introduced into the picture after this which we find to be Anya from the first two games, we’re assuming that this being the final game in the trilogy its going to be a stand off and everyone left in the human civilisation will be handed a weapon in order to survive. Shortly after we see both Cole and Baird in the scene all huddled around trying to kill off the enemy, does this mean we will see 5 player co-op in the new title? we certainly hope so!
So we have our 5 hero’s surrounded by a legion of locusts and then a new beast appears with huge tentacles that can hit you behind cover, oh dear. We’ve been informed that this enemy actually shape shifts as well. Not much is known about the new enemy but we think its what forced the locusts underground in the first place.
The only other notable thing about the trailer is everyone’s wearing sleeveless armour which indicates a summertime feel for the game and also correlates with the Epic Unreal Engine 3 demo at GDC earlier in the year which involved a Brumak running through a jungle.
We look forward to further materials being released later this year.
UPDATE
Thanks the DeadmanDRB on Twitter for pointing out that Dom is wielding a Hammerburst with a Bayonet attachment, hopefully a melee reply to the Chainsaw on the Lancer.

The weapon is question has now been identified as the Pendulum Wars Lancer.

Early thoughts are: Looks great, 3 way war? And I also think Dom may die at some point in the game, he looks like he’s ready to die at the start of the trailer and he looks rough…

Damn, the war really is taking it’s toll on everyone. I think the new threat is definitely to do with the Imulsion exposure. If I remember correctly they were referred to as the Lambent?
Also, Anya is looking good <3

Okay, I’m not here troll but Gears 3 is set 18 months after Gears 2. Also the ‘Hammerburst bayonet’ is actually a Pendulum Lancer.

yeah dizzy the game is set 18 months after but I think that this is an accumulation of the game entirely and not like a scene from it or something. I think that it is a ,question raising, sails technique to try to make us wonder what everything is but I think that there may be a flashback part for a few reasons. One the lancer is from the pendulum wars and the beginning of the locust war time. two it could be right after they “destroyed their civilization” with the hammer of dawn like the queen talks about in the gears one intro movie which is why there are ash bodies. I also believe that the bearded guy isn’t dom, but doms brother carlos like in the book “aspho fields” but he isnt in the first or second game because he dies early on. and last there is a women who i dont think is anya but just a woman gear because they had them in the pendulum wars and a bit after e-day because anya doesnt fight she talks. but it is a mix of everything in the game because they show the lambent attacking and cole and baird so it could just be a sandwich of whats to come and it will be all explained in order over the next year.

Naaah, it isn’t a volcano, must be some kind of incredible bomb or explosion, cause the bodies are intact shapes of the living people who see the explosion coming, a volcano melt everyting, not burn in that way…
And yeah, dom is destroyed, you can see in his face that he has no reason to fight anymore and he is ready to die, but i know and we all know that marcus wont let him die. But maybe in the game dom do something like a sacrifice for the team, because he only wanted to be with maria but now, i think that we all know that when a soul leave the body, the body will not take in going away along with

Ramiro, it could definitely be a volcano and it was my first thought too – Google “Pompeii Bodies” and you’ll see ash bodies just like the ones in the video.

in pompeii the people were covered by the volcano ashes no made into ashes susan, and then the bodies of the people in pompeii were burned COVERED by the ashes
