Eurogamer Expo: Brink

Well the queue for this certainly was impressive but was the game? Well in one word yes! The Team Fortress 2 / Shadownrun looking game will certainly hold is own when its released in spring next year.
A simple game based around attack and defend between 2 factions sounds simple but has a number of intricacies to make this game a stand out title. If you don’t work as a team and share the skill sets on offer you will quite simply fail.
There are 4 classes to choose from: Soldier, Medic, Engineer or Operative each has unique skills sets, all of which can be used to share and buff your team up. The game is tough and is certainly one that if you just charge in running and gunning you will be dead fast. Think, move and work as a team. This is certainly the key if you are to take a victory.
The game also has a underlying XP system which rewards you for kills, assists etc. These in turn can be spent on upgrades for your character with new weapons and bonuses. Accessing the objective wheel gives you the current objective as well as bonus XP objectives. These have been cleverly added in to help you ‘share’ your skill sets and get you into the correct mindset needed to master Brink and reward you with XP in the process.
Not a massive part of the game but SMART is a Mirror’s Edge style of movement; Smooth Movement Across Random Terrain. The map I played introduced an element to this but only touched on it. I’m sure SMART will come into play more on other maps in the world of Brink, or rather I hope it does!
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this game and can’t wait to get the full game code, it’s going to be frustrating online as not everyone wants to work together as a team. Those gamers that do insist on being Rambo will quickly learn the hard way that team play IS the only way to succeed at this game.
As fun as Team Fortress and as clever in map design and edginess as Shadowrun, Brink is polished off with a dose of hard competitive play that will see this game get a lot of online attention from me when it releases.
Eurogamer Expo is the UK’s biggest annual video games event. This year the event took place at London’s Earls Court and the hottest anticipated titles were on show for the public to go hands on with, many developers and representatives were also on hand for quizzing and also to give out special goodies to lucky gamers. This year xboxer360 was in attendance and this is our impression of the games we got to play on:
