UPDATE: Apparantly the simultaneous EU/US release was not all as it seems. “There was a misunderstanding and there is no confirmed date for Europe,” an unnamed spokesperson from EA told Eurogamer. Im sure the rest of the EU can join us in being 100% Not. Happy.

Just as the dust from the (semi) Europe release of Rock Band 1 has settled, EA and Harmonix have confirmed that Rock Band 2 is due for release in September. Undercutting Guitar Hero World Tour by several months.

Harmonix have confirmed that the EU and US versions will both release in the same month although, not neccessarily on the same day.

Among the confirmed features is the ability to play all DLC from Rock Band 1, from now untill infinity. Harmonix have said that new instruments will be released in a bundle pack featuring several upgrades, although they refuse to comment on what exactly these upgrades are.

Movie tie ins with games and vice versa have always been riddled with problems in attempts to capture the cinematic feel within the game of the thrill factor and fantastic set pieces from the game into a move rendition most fall flat on their digital faces.

Being a Marvel fan and Ironman being a favourite of mine I dashed out to see the movie and when given the chance to play the game of the movie I set aside my usual reservations and loaded the game up. Next time I do that feel free to give me a slap, not a hard one mind you just a light rap on knuckles will do.

All seemed well and the main screen and options menus look crisp and matched the feel that you would expect from the game, but then when the game started it felt more like all the processing power of my Xbox had been used to simple power the menus. Graphically the game looked and felt not like a brand new offering from the next gen stables but something that would of felt happier on the original Xbox, with an almost unacceptable level of image tear while playing.

Taking the initial Ironman prototype from the movie and using the escape scene from the same as your opening level does give you the opportunity to learn the control styles at a pace that is manageable, since you can only use certain features while you wait for your comrade to “boot up” the various suit features. But the most noticeable thing about playing the games is the horrible camera control which seemed to simple not want to look where you’d want it to look with a twitch reaction that would put a gun fighter to shame. This was bad enough on the ground but throw in following missions where the next gen of Ironman suits had the ability for flight and the most you can hope for is a mild dose of motion sickness.

The game play itself soon become boring and repetitive and while your given the option to upgrade your armour as your progress it really doesn’t lend much to the game as after using these new powers 3-4 times you’ll soon become bored. While I have not played the game long enough to unlock the silver centurion or hulk buster armours, I really have not felt the need to play any more then I already had.

As much as I hate to have nothing outstandingly positive to say about a game it seems Ironman has joined the ranks and file of the un-fun, which for any game to fail to even be entertaining must surely be a bad result. All in all I would give this game a very disappointing 2 out of 10 but it has also reminded me of why movie/game crossovers really should be avoided.

Treyarch have announced today that they will be releasing exclusively to the xbox360 marketplace the trailer for Call of Duty 5: World at War including in game footage. But it will only be available from a short period between the 21st and 22nd of June so if you do want a sneak peek then don’t delay as it won’t be there for ever. Midway have now confirmed that Unreal Tournament 3 will be hitting UK stores on 4th July. This will be great news for any Xbox360ers who have been waiting for this and felt let down by the PS3 getting it first.

BUT to console you when you buy the Xbox version you will be receiving a plethora of extra content giving you a new split screen mode, all the DLC so far released and 5 brand new levels.

It seems theres another case of marketing departments dropping the ball, when this week it seems as though some eagle-eyed viewers have spotted what seem to be the new tracks for release in Rock Band.

In an advert airing on MTV in the US promoting Rock Band, there is a quick scroll through the list of songs available for download. If you look carefully then you can see some songs previously unseen which contain the tag “NOT READY TO TEST”.

The four tracks are:

• “Aesthetics of Hate” by Machine Head
• “Afterlife” by Avenged Sevenfold
  
• “Breed” by Nirvana
• “Burn” by Nine Inch Nails

Heres hoping we’ll see them sooner rather than later, Maybe they’ll be acompanied by more of the same in a pack..

Heavy words indeed, but Im not sure I can forgive Fiddy for the abomination that was Bulletproof but it seems as though the dev team are making a genuinely good game rather than a companion for the latest album.

In a blatant attempt to piggy back on the recent success of Rockstar’s GTA IV, THQ have released the latest trailer for their sequel to their game Saints Row. THQ deny attempting to steal the limelight but I’ll leave it for you to decide. GTA IV fans please take a deep breath before saying anything.

“The trailer directly attacks Grand Theft Auto IV in-game content, an unusually pompous position in our view, considering GTA IV is estimated to be the highest grossing first-week entertainment release of all time - and is currently the highest quality scored game on both the Xbox 360 and PS3 according to Metacritic.com,”

In a recent interview with UK industry magazine OXM Treyarch announced some new details regarding the next instalment in the Call of Duty series including it’s name, setting and multi-player details. Read on after the jump for more details.

This new title from Treyarch will be once again set within the theatre of war of WWII but unlike previous games in the series where the action took place in Europe, Africa and Russia this time your primarily squaring off against your enemies in the Pacific front giving gamers the chance to take the combat to a more tropical battleground.

You will be playing as a captured American marine for part of the game and the opening sequence leaves no doubt that this will be one of the darker chapters of the call of duty series as you watch helpless as a fellow marine is tortured and then executed by a Japanese POW officer, but just as you are about to share the same fate you are rescued by a squad of marines who then proceed to extract a bloody revenge on the Japanese soldiers.

Treyarch have claimed that by using this setting for “World at War” they can provide us with a more darker aspect to a war simulation then we have experienced before. Having spoken to veterans from both sides of the campaign they have recreated the spirit of the Royal Japanese army and their Bushido spirit of do or die and honour above all else. Keeping as close to the history of actual events and tactics as much as possible we can expect our adversaries to employ a variety of attacks ranging from the Banzai assault that was soon proved to be ineffective early in the war to the covert actions of an army engaged in guerrilla warfare.

Continuing their darkened theme for this game Treyarch have employed an equally dark time during the war where the Russian forces began their push into Germany. This was a no holds bar assault and occupation, revenge for the atrocities inflicted on the Russians during the Nazi occupation. Does this mean that rather then honour being the underlying force that we experienced in other Call of Duty chapters now revenge and retribution are our main stays?

On the technical side of the game Treyarch will be using Infinity Ward’s game engine from Call of Duty 4 as the basis while making improvements of their own, trees now sway and bend more realistically, buildings can be destroyed allowing gamers to choose to either shoot a small hole through buildings to get that kill or to blow a massive hole in the side big enough to allow them to walk through it. A new feature added is propagating fire meaning that once something is alight it can and oft will from reports carry on burning and the fire will spread. This will come in very handy with the new flame-thrower weapon Treyarch are introducing.

With the multi-player we’re being given a feature that many of us have longed for for quite sometime which is 4 player campaign co-op either from 4 Xbox 360’s over Xbox live or 2 Xbox 360’s split screening over Xbox live allowing you to gain the band of brother feeling that sometimes is missing. Using Infinity Wards engine as a base Treyarch will be keeping the more popular features of the previous instalment by including “perks” which can be earned as you progress, with the additional bonus of a campaign points system like the Call of Duty 4 metagame with the points earnt being available to spend on co-op specific perks or transferred over to purchase more multi-player perks. Another new feature is rumoured to be an upgrade to the party system from Call of Duty 4 meaning that the party leader becomes the team leader being able to send commands to the others on the team with the map showing way points the leader has marked.

Returning from Call of Duty 3 will be the vehicle missions one of which will be as part of the crew of a PBY flying boat on a anti-submarine anti-aircraft carrier mission in the campaign as well as new vehicle based multi-player maps and game modes.

On paper Call of Duty 5: “World at War” sounds like a winning game a better addition to the series then Treyarch’s previous offering which suffered from only an 11 month development time, having 2 years development time given to them as well as the good work done by the guys at Infinity Ward to base themselves on may well help them re earn the respect of gamers who felt let down by their last attempt.

Below you will find the email I sent to GAME as well as the the response I received,

“Hello I was recently in your Fleet branch of game and I was informed that you were no longer stocking preowned Xbox original games? Is this true and what are the official reasons this action is being taken? Also I was informed that this was occurring in the smaller stores first while larger stores would follow soon, is this true? Also why is this action being taken when preowned PlayStation 2 games are still being stocked in great abundance?”

“As Xbox originals are old consoles the games for these are no longer being manufactured due to the Xbox 360 popularity and because the newer versions of the 360 can’t play them. Ps2 games are slightly different because they can be used on the new Ps3 60g consoles. I hope this helps with your query.“

Now while it is in fact true that Xbox games are no longer being produced it is untrue that the newer Xbox 360’s consoles cannot play them. Really this as most people would suspect is a cost cutting exercise by GAME, and what with the catalogue of games available to the PS3 is still rather limited in comparison to those available for the Xbox 360 I guess Sony gamers would require all the help they could get. If there is any confusion on the part of GAME it could be down to fact that while Microsoft wanted to offer us as many titles as possible it is not possible to provide patches for all the games out there and are no longer releasing any more updates. Not that the new consoles couldn’t handle it but the fact that the Backwards compatible list will not be getting any longer.

This unfortunately doesn’t help your roving reporter who still hunts for a now more elusive copy of Fable the lost chapters

Marred by all sorts of complaints about prices and late releases Rock Band EU hasn’t gotten off to an exactly smooth release but we’re here to ask, Is it really worth all your hard earned money?

The first thing you’ll see when you boot up the game is an excellent FMV set to the tune of Deep Purple’s ‘Highway Star’ and it really sets the tone for the rest of your experience. Excellent tunes, Decent graphics and most importantly, A full band. Rock Band has an easy to use and well designed menu system so you can be sure to be rocking in less than 30 seconds although playing as a band takes a little more organisation. Selecting the ‘Band Quickplay’ option allows you to pick your instrument and character in a simple lobby system and you pick and song you want to play. However, Band World Tour (Arguably the games showpiece) allows your band to go on tour and play set lists in major cities around the world.

Unfortunately, this can prove to be quite irritating as the game often chooses random set-lists, causing you to play the same few songs over and over until you unlock a new city and hence, new songs.

Graphics.

Rock Band is a visually impressive game, far superior to the current generation of Guitar Hero games anyway. I can’t help but notice that the characters seem to look very similar to those found in another EA game, The Sims 2. Maybe its just me, but there’s definitely some resemblance. Not to say thats a bad thing though, I like the look of the characters. The screen layout is presented well, even in the anarchy that is a full 4-man band, although don’t expect to understand what’s going on if you’re playing on an 18” 4:3 TV.

Sound.

Obviously Rock Band’s forte is the sound track and quality. Thankfully its brilliant, I couldn’t fault it at all. Some of the tracks featured on the main set-list are covers of the originals (Indicated by the “As made famous by:” prefix) but even these are pretty faultless. I downloaded a selection of tracks from the XBLM including covers and masters and again, the sound quality is excellent.

Gameplay.

Brilliant. Anyone who’s played Guitar Hero will be familiar with the interface and methods of input. Hold the note and strum, and for drums wait for your cue and hit. Simple? Far from it. Once you’ve conquered your selected difficulty level (Easy, Medium, Hard or Expert), you can climb to the next and do it all over again with added notes, increased chart speed etc and get a fresh experience. The guitar charts are very similar to that of Guitar Hero 1 and 2 (Before they went all crazy in 3..) but the timing windows feel a lot tighter. After playing versions of songs in both games I found that RB was a lot more strict on the timings of your strums, but that might just be a personal error. The drums charts for the game are very good. I’ve played several tracks on the expert difficulty in RB and from the same chart with great success I’ve translated the song to real drums. The lower difficulties introduce techniques such as drums rolls etc, that you can then take on as you push on through the difficulties. The vocals section of the game is a lot like the layout for Singstar, You sing and match your pitch to the bar indicated on the screen. It can be a bit difficult to learn the idea first time round but you’ll soon get used to it. My only quarrel is the jump in difficulties, Easy can be finished by randomly talking in the mic, Medium is too fussy on what you do, But Hard mode expects you to know every song and be damn near pitch perfect, Expert a step above that. Again, Im sure its just my incompetence, but worth a mention none-the-less.

Peripherals.

A unique check for this review, but an important one. The instruments  I received were those included in the ‘Band in a Box’ set. Firstly the drum kit I got was an EL series kit which has received  several revision in the US and Im deeply confused as to why we EU players get this apparently defective design.. Playing the hard mode career I found that the bass pedal felt very cheap and not like what you’d find on a real drum kit. But I suppose thats what 3rd party mods are for. I also found that I was dropping notes all too often but I fixed this by using my own heavier drum sticks. The guitar seems very well put together and plays well but I found that straight out of the box my orange fret button was ‘sticking’ so thats off for replacement. The strum feels very different to that of the Guitar Hero guitars but not necessarily worse, after a bit of practice you’ll soon be rocking out with very little trouble. The microphone is just a microphone really, but it should be noted that you HAVE to use a controller with the mic as it has no controls on it. All in all not a bad set but I was less than impressed with the faulty guitar..

Conclusion.

Finally, to answer the question “Is Rock Band really worth the money” Id have to answer yes. We found that it could be purchased in its entirety from PLAY.com at just £130. If you are prepared to put down the money then you’ll be rewarded with hours and hours worth of fun, constantly expandable with tracks off the Marketplace.

For anyone who has explored the world of Warhammer and Warhammer 40k may be familiar with another of Games Workshops table top game which went by the name of Bloodbowl.

Imagine American Football but with the carnage ramped up to an insane level. Oh and your star quarter back happens to be a agile lithe dark elf goddess with long flaming hair and long shapel…..*slap* (sorry about that back to the preview) and your main blocker is a 300 pound Orc!

I have in my dim distant past played the table top version and I do remember nothing but fond memories of trouncing my opponents in combat thinly veiled as a sport, how this will transfer to the Xbox 360 I can’t be sure yet as there seems to be an absence of video footage as of this moment but I can share with you the latest screen shots available (click here).

All in all if Games Workshop are able to the keep the magic that I enjoyed from the table top game and transfer it into a Xbox 360 game then I shall be a happy bunny, or a mid sized red puddle if I get in the way of that Orc blocker lol.

While performing an on the spot interview with GAME employees it appears that as of now GAME will no longer be stocking preowned Xbox games this is being actioned in the smaller high street stores with the scheme being rolled out nationwide to the larger stores apparently “soon” when questioned about this I was given no reason and same applies for time frame.

The reason this has struck me as so unusual is that GAME still insist on stocking preowned PS2 games which appear to take up in Fleet branch at least half the store. While this is a inconvineance for Xbox 360 owners who enjoy the backwards compatably option no official word has yet been recieced from GAME head offices.

Call of Duty 4 developers Infinity Ward announced today that COD 4 has broken the 10 million copies sold mark, this puts it into an elite group of only 10 previous games that have broken this mark since 2000. Unfortunately there seems to be little information as to what the other games were but this is still an impressive feat for any developer.

So congratulations of the day go to Infinity Ward.
