Review – Saints Row IV: Enter the Dominatrix

Saints Row IV was easily the craziest installment the series has seen, with Volition clearly not holding back when shoehorning every off the wall idea and innuendo laden set piece. It’s fantastic sandbox-mania, but you may still be left wondering whatever happened to that infamous DLC which lead to Saint Row IV being made?

What happened to that infamous DLC which lead to Saint Row IV being made?

Enter The Dominatrix, had quite a turbulent time, being that it was initially intended as an expansion for Saints Row the Third before eventually having its horizon blown wide open to expand it into a sequel.

Now finally seeing its release as DLC, in a twist to the story the planet is captured by the Zin army led by the malicious evil genius Zinyak but he’s not the real threat. After all, a quick bullet to the face and a QTE and he’ll be gone. No, the real threat is a rogue AI known as The Dominatrix who, along with her army of sex slaves and gimps, has taken over the program and is terrorising (perhaps also pleasuring) the planet!

ETD, as Zynyak likes to call it, plays like a Director’s Cut of the original concept. Allowing you to play some of the most insanely enjoyable missions the team could think of, ranging from interesting spins on missions you’ve seen in Saints Row IV to some that are buckets of mayhem but just didn’t make the cut. Each section is set up by the ‘cast’ of the saints being interview by Jane Valderamma, talking about all the game bloopers and why they were sad or glad to have seen Enter the Dominatrix take a back seat in their universe. Some even have a good old moan about their lack of screen time.

Some of the missions can feel a little rinse and repeat on occasions, offering up the usual mix of “kill the enemies” “chase the Dominatrix” and “destroy everything in sight” but there are some odd ones thrown in there which more than make up for the standard massacre missions. My personal favourite being extremely BDSM-centric mission “13th annual pony race invitational” which puts you in a chariot led by a gimp running for his life while you are forced to stop the opposition getting that coveted 1st place position.

As you would have come to expect, Enter the Dominatrix does its best to poke fun at gaming tropes and mechanics but more surprisingly and hilariously, Volition have even gone so far as to poke fun at the game development process. Choosing to use (original?) storyboards for cut scenes rather than full renders it allows the team to display some of their crazier ideas. You just can’t top off a space ship mission any better than by having a staff member holding a drinks can while flying a toy ship around the room to the sound of his own raspberries.

Steelport looks much the same for this add-on, which is perhaps somewhat of a missed opportunity as I was bracing myself for some huge changes, but it’s obvious that a lot of care has gone into all those geeky nods to the franchise you’re bound to know and love, with one of the Dominatrix right hand men springing to mind. When you pay him a visit, you’ll find Dom the Dom sitting proudly on his Game of Thrones-esque chair (Only its made out of dildos of course). A childish laugh perhaps but in this Instagram world, I loved it. That’s not to mention a couple of winks towards Star Wars which you’ll have to look out for.

On your journey you’ll be granted a fresh set of heavy-duty guns including a pretty sweet mini-gun, along with a slew of new vehicles to add to your collection once the game is done. What’s wealth without friends though right? Thankfully Voltion thought to bring all those interesting characters into your group of buds meaning when you fancy mopping up all those left over missions from the main campaign you can bring some new homies along for the ride, including the Dominatrix herself, Dom the Dom or even Ted the Velociraptor! (he’s not really a dinosaur, but his suit looks cool enough).

Overall, Enter the Dominatrix is a great addition to the Saints Row IV experience, it’s got some great laughs and a cool cast of characters and while it may be a little short, it’s just more of the crazy action we’ve come to expect from the guys at Volition. Go blow up some alien freaks, BDSM weirdos and if you’re lucky, you may even get to ride off into the sunset on a Velociraptor!

Now to wait for ‘How The Saints Saved Christmas’.

About Ben Rayner

If he's not saving the world from zombie hordes (yes he works in retail) Ben can found playing almost any game he can get his hands on! Hitman and Max Payne are his games of choice but don't let that fool you, he can hold his own in a game of C.O.D! He also likes Tea, Whiskey and short walks home...to his Xbox! Say Hi! I love to talk!
