Call of Duty 4 Double XP Weekend 08 September 2008 at 1:56 pm by Dave Burns

Call of Duty 4

Fourzerotwo has posted on his blog that Infinity Ward are having a double XP weekend this coming weekend for Xbox 360 and PS3 owners.  Now some speculation suggests that this double XP weekend will run in line with the new playlist updates, which naturally would make sense but it could also celebrate overtaking Halo 3 again in Xbox Live usage.  How about more frequent double XP weekends IW? Halo are always having double XP weekends!

After a few weeks of sitting in 2nd place Call of Duty 4 has regained #1 spot on Xbox Live followed by Halo 3 in 2nd place and GTA IV in 3rd place.  To celebrate Inifinity Ward are giving us another Double XP weekend on all game types and have also introducing a new playlist to make all maps even in rotation (So no more Chinatown 50 times in a row)

+ Easter Playlist for Halo 3 By Dave Burns 06 March 2008 at 1:21 pm and have No Comments

Halo 3
Bungie have been very nice to us gamers and are releasing 2 new gametypes for 2 weekends to celebrate Easter.  Starting tonight at 8pm GMT till the same time on Monday night, you will be able to play Unranked Grifball, which is similar to rugby and involves 2 teams of 4 trying to take a ball into the enemies defence.  Bungie has changed the rules for this slightly but all will become clear when you play.

The other game type is called Team SWAT which was a popular mod from Halo 2.  This gametype starts on 20th March at 8pm GMT and will go through until 23rd at 8pm GMT.

Both gametypes will earn you Double Experience, so if that isn’t an excuse to play these mods then I don’t know what is!  Bungie have also made modifications to the Herioc DLC, full details can be located here.

Halo 3
Finally the moment we’ve all been waiting for, Big team battle goes ranked! Players can now push towards that godlike General rank in 8v8 battles. Slayer games are the favoured format although, CTF, Territories and Bomb modes are supported. Matches will usually default to Assault and Battle Rifles, but the wonderful mega-maps like sandtrap are supported so prepare to be hammered with an onslaught of Killpocalypse and Invincible medals…

Marketplace Update
More news from the rumour mill is that the Euro Video Marketplace will be expanding its library of about 30 films to about 400. Really? Allegedly we’ll be getting all the hit US shows like Desperate Housewives and Greys Anatomy, as well as others. I can hardly wait. At least they havent forgotten us poor saps over the pond anyway, shame it took them over a year to remember though…

+ Xbox Live Demos Restricted By Dave Burns 07 January 2008 at 5:22 pm and have No Comments

Access to the latest Xbox Live playable demos are now restricted as part of the autumn update. Anyone with a Silver account must now wait a week before accessing any free content, allowing Gold account members to fill their boots meantime. Microsoft says this isn’t a penalty for freebie Silver subscribers, instead a benefit to the paid-for Gold supporters.

Rather than an incentive to join Gold, this is a bit of a slap in the face don’t you think? As Sony’s PlayStation Network grows from strength to strength, and is free for all, how much longer can Microsoft keep this annual subscription thing going on Xbox Live? This is surely a backwards step.

+ E3: The Return? By Dave Burns 19 December 2007 at 1:43 pm and have No Comments

The Entertainment Software Association has confirmed that the E3 Media & Business Summit will be returning back to its historic digs at the Los Angeles Convention Center next year.

Is the ‘old’ super-sized E3 back from the dead? Not quite.

“We are very much not going back to the old E3,” Rich Taylor, senior vice president of communications and research for the ESA, told Kotaku. “I think we are all on the same page for the industry on what we want those days in July to be about.”

Taylor calls it the “new E3, new and improved.”

Last year there was a change of direction for the infamous gaming super-expo, diverting from million dollar booths and endless fanboy queues to a more intimate setting in nearby Santa Monica.

The lack of queues was welcome, but the change to Santa Monica received plenty of criticism from the gaming press (we had to get the bus!).

For next year’s event, which will run from July 15 through July 17, the “media summit” will keep its small, more intimate meetings with less than 4000 attendees and not a booth babe in site.

“We talked to many folks, participants on both the media and industry side of things, one of the overriding things they wanted was a more centralized facility,” Taylor said. “That’s one reason we moved back to the LA Convention Center… hotels are walking distance from the convention center, they’re closer to each other…”

The ESA said the event will “continue to focus on the business of the computer and video game industry, with an emphasis on press events and small meetings with media, development, and other key sectors. While there will be opportunities for game demonstrations, the 2008 E3 Media & Business Summit will not feature the large trade show environment of previous years.”

Let’s hope after last year’s shake-up that this hits the nail on the head.
