Activision “getting concerned about Sony”

Speaking exclusively to the Times Online, Activision’s top man Bobby Kotick says ““I’m getting concerned about Sony; the PlayStation 3 is losing a bit of momentum and they don’t make it easy for me to support the platform. It’s expensive to develop for the console, and the Wii and the Xbox are just selling better. Games generate a better return on invested capital on the Xbox than on the PlayStation,”

Bobby’s fears appear to be rooted in the retail price of Sony’s console: ““They have to cut the price, because if they don’t, the attach rates [the number of games each console owner buys] are likely to slow. If we are being realistic, we might have to stop supporting Sony. When we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console — and the PSP [portable] too.”

Interestingly enough, Bobby reckons that Activision paid $500 million to Sony in royalties and other goods last year, which he says “probably still worked out at 400 per cent of the profit they made”.

Potentially bad news for Sony then, considering Activion’s mighty Guitar Hero franchise, the return of Tony Hawk and the hotley anticipated DJ Hero – both due later this year, alongside Guitar Hero 5 and Guitar Hero: Smash Hits.

I’m not one to brag, but all I can say is this: “put that in your pipe and smoke it, Sony – you Ghostbusters stealing fiends”.

What do you guys think? How far will Sony go to placate Kotick? Is a price drop on the horizon?
